The world’s first slideable phone is reportedly in development by Chinese companies Vivo and Transsion. Last September, Transsion revealed its first slideable phone prototype which gathered a lot of hype. Chinese companies have realized that surpassing Samsung in the foldable market is not possible and henceforth adopting new design techniques to pass the leading mobile manufacturer. The slideable panel for this device is being developed by CSOT, a Chinese display company.

According to industry reports on the 9th, Vivo and Transsion are aiming to launch this design by the end of next year. The device will be able to provide an extendable display that can be utilized for many purposes e.g: gaming, productivity etc.

The primary concept behind the slideable phones has already been tried by LG just before it pulled out of the smartphone market, though it was called rollable phones at that time. Those “rollable” panels were provided by BOE at that time.

Tecno Phantom Ultimate

Transsion’s “Tecno Phantom Ultimate” slide phone was introduced as a concept device in September of Last Year. This product was first shown off by Transsion as a rollable smartphone. Transsion states that pressing the product’s top button causes the 6.55-inch display to expand to the full 7.11-inch size in 1.2–1.3 seconds.

Transsion claims that its product uses power-efficient thin-film transsistors made from low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO). Displayed on a 7.11-inch screen at a resolution of 2296×1596 with a pixel density of 388PPI (Pixels Per Inch), etc. Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Fold 5 folding phone, which debuted in the second half of 2023, features a 7.6-inch infinity display with a resolution of 2176×1812 and a pixel density of 373PPI.

Tecno Phantom Ultimate | Transsion

CSOT designed the new product panel concept for the Transsion slideable phone. It has been stated that Transsion is working on a product (Tecno Phantom Ultimate) with the intention of releasing it before the end of 2024. The interior structure of the slideable phone needs to be made in such a way that the extended screen can endure external shocks without causing any damage. The hinge used in foldable smartphones serves a distinct purpose here as well.

Vivo is also working on a sliding phone for a possible parallel release. The panel for Vivo’s sliding phone is rumoured to come from either CSOT or Samsung Display. Compared to Samsung Display, CSOT is thought to be less affected by the production yield of innovative form factor products, thus it may be more involved in the supply of Vivo slideable phone panels.

As it seems unlikely that they would be able to compete with Samsung Electronics in the foldable phone market, Chinese smartphone manufacturers are reportedly working hard on slideable phones. Samsung Electronics is working on a wide range of form factor devices, including slideable phones, but right now it needs to concentrate on growing the market for foldable phones. Delivering the world’s first mass-produced slideable phone panels could give the Chinese government the image that they are at the forefront of inventing innovative form factor products, and CSOT and other Chinese panel makers could benefit from this perception.

Further details are unknown as of yet, however, we will make sure to update you in case of any progression.

The mystery of Samsung’s Smart Ring has lingered for some time now, and while many rumors this year have pointed towards a release date in the near future, there have been no official confirmations regarding the project. Earlier, it was believed that the ring would be launched alongside Samsung’s Z Fold 6, however, this deadline may be extended.

According to TheElec, the ring is in advanced development as of now, and since the design (as of now) is simply too big for commercial use, Samsung is looking to tone down the dimensions a bit before moving to mass production.

The ring will apparently come in a single model, however, there will be four sizes available for different finger sizes. In addition to this, it is possible that the ring may be delayed until the first quarter of 2025. However, if it isn’t, the release of Samsung’s sixth-gen foldables may be delayed to launch alongside the ring altogether.

Oura Ring | Oura

Not only that, but the Samsung Smart Ring will allegedly have better health tracking sensors than Samsung’s Smart Watch. Perhaps something similar to the Pixel Watch 2‘s multipath heart rate sensor; however, reducing the size would be challenging given how a lot of additional features will also be incorporated within the watch which will have to be cut down. Additionally, it will come equipped with ECG and PPG sensors.

Considering that Samsung will require medical approval for these health tracking sensors, which is mostly the primary objective of this ring, it is possible that the release itself may experience delays beyond the initial announcement. We also reported last month on the possibility of the watch being named ‘Curio,’ although this could merely be a codename for Samsung’s smart ring project.

At this moment, even after a lot of information has come to light, it is unclear why Samsung is keeping the smart ring project under wraps, but it’s possible that the company is still ironing out the details. See, smart rings are a relatively new product category, and there are still some challenges to overcome to bring them to commercial markets.

Samsung undoubtedly makes some of the best WearOS watches in the market, and this transition to a smaller form factor will bring about its own challenges. However, since the smart ring market isn’t populated with all sorts of companies, it’s possible that Samsung might just have a little bit of an edge after its first product launch.

Watch 6 Classic | Samsung

With companies such as Oura running the same race for almost a decade now, Samsung might have problems competing at the start, but that is exactly what we want to see—something new and innovative in the smallest form factor.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

Several major international gaming studios, including Epic Games and Krafton, have announced their partnership with Samsung Electronics to create exclusive customised games for the Galaxy Fold. It has been decided that more “foldable-specific content” in the global market is needed to rapidly expand the market for foldable smartphones. Samsung Electronics is planning to set itself apart from Chinese rivals by promoting Galaxy foldable phones with games designed just for them.

The “Gaming Task Force (TF) Team” is now reportedly active at Samsung Research in four countries: South Korea, the United Kingdom, China, and Ukraine, according to reports by the industry.

Gaming TF is collaborating with major publishers all over the world to create original games for foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold and the Flip 5. Epic Games in the United States, Krafton, NCSoft, Nexon, Smilegate, Kakao Games, and Pearl Abyss are all working together on this. Samsung Electronics and game developers are using a “hotline” to collaborate on new game creation and popular titles’ optimization for foldable phones.

Market research firm TrendForce predicts that only 1.6% of all smartphones will be foldable models shipped this year. According to Samsung Electronics, the market for foldable phones would benefit from more media attention (games, etc.) being devoted to the form factor. As the game’s screen is twice as tall as a regular phone’s, it’s being considered as content that can showcase the benefits of a foldable device.

Z Fold 5 & Z Flip 5 | Samsung

Customizing Games for Foldable Devices

Samsung is certain that its foldable display technology represents a major technological breakthrough. However, in order to make foldables as popular as expected in the premium smartphone market, it will be necessary to provide killer content or software, such as UI/UX designs.

“As smartphone performance improves, an environment has been created where high-end games can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere,” stated an executive from the video game industry.

User-created content is what will make the Galaxy Fold and Flip 5 series the best gaming machines, according to TM Roh, president and head of Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division. The company introduced two models of its Galaxy Z foldable phone series, now in its fifth generation, in July of this year.

The benefits of foldable phones, which have larger screens than standard smartphones and can utilize one side of the screen like a joystick, will be fully implemented in upcoming games. Users of Fold and Flip phones can utilize either display as a game screen, with the other serving as control buttons, or both screens can be utilized simultaneously to create a more immersive gaming experience.

Exposure for Game Developers

When game developers team up with Samsung, they gain access to the company’s vast consumer base, which includes 1 billion Galaxy smartphone users.

Ares: Rise of Guardians,” created and distributed by Kakao Games in collaboration with Google Inc., will be released by Samsung in August next year. This mobile game is compatible with Samsung Galaxy devices.

Ares Rise of Guardians | Kakao Games

“Collaboration with digital content providers is as important as telecom companies like AT&T and retailers like Best Buy,” a Samsung official stated.

Collaboration with Google

Samsung Electronics has big hopes to grow its Galaxy foldable smartphone industry by integrating it into more and more games. Samsung’s mobile game industry is anticipated to grow with the introduction of the “Samsung Gaming Hub,” a cloud gaming platform tailored specifically for Galaxy devices. This will be made public in the first quarter of next year. Accessing the gaming hub and playing foldable-optimized games will be simple for Galaxy customers.

The business isn’t only focusing on games, though; it also wants to create a UI and UX design for foldable cellphones. For this reason, Samsung Electronics is communicating extensively with Google, the maker and provider of the Android operating system.

After the A17 Pro was initially put to the test, the results were not particularly intriguing, with problems of overheating surfacing online. Not only that, but the chipset failed to reach its maximum potential due to excessive thermal throttling, to the point where it struggled to keep up in even the most basic of testing scenarios.

Apple addressed the issue in the new iOS 17.0.3 update, which apparently seemed to fix the issue, somewhat. However, the more important speculation was: did Apple push back the performance numbers on the 15 Pros to stop them from overheating. Well, as it turns out, no.

Recently, after the 17.0.3 update was shipped out, YouTuber ITSub tested the performance and battery life of the iPhone 15 Pro against the iPhone 14 Pro, both running the same version of iOS.

Not only did Apple fix the issues with excessive heat generation, but it managed to bump up the performance too. To compare the graphical performance of the iPhone 15 Pro, it was put to test under the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, where it managed to obtain a quite decent score of 4274. This is ~13% improvement over the 3757 on iOS 17.0.2.

iPhone 15 Pro in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test Before & After iOS 17.0.3

The iPhone 14 Pro also seemed to have gained some sort of an improvement, gaining a small 8% advantage over the previous best score. All in all, the iPhone 15 Pro was ~27% better than the last year’s iPhone 14 Pro.

As for battery life, the update did bring about some degree of improvement, but not enough to make a significant difference compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. However, the iPhone 15 Pro did see about 3-4% more than that on iOS 17.0.2.

iPhone 15 Pro’s Battery Before & After iOS 17.0.3

From a broader perspective, iOS 17.0.3 did seem to have addressed most of the problems that people had with their phones, but at the same time, also has ignored some, such as the Wi-Fi disconnection issues. Not to mention how, the battery life is still not better than last year’s iPhone 14 Pro, despite having a supposedly “more-efficient” 3nm SoC.

The iPhone 15 Pro series, while featuring some of the most “practical” changes, did not receive the praise that iPhones usually do. Days after its release, the phone was plagued by reports of overheating and thermal throttling. While it was the first phone to feature a 3nm SoC, the A17 Pro seemed to do more harm than good.

Apple addressed the issue last week, citing that some apps weren’t properly configured and that it would take a bit of time for the phones during their setup period, during which they would require extra processing, leading to slightly more heat generation than usual. Then, on October 5th, Apple released iOS 17.0.3, fixing a lot of the issues people had with the new phones, while surprisingly keeping the performance numbers almost the same.

But the update then led to a plethora of new issues, particularly with the Wi-Fi connection on the phone. On Apple’s Community Forums and Reddit, we have seen how users have been reporting that while connected to Wi-Fi, most of the content does not seem to load. While reconnecting sometimes does the job, others have experienced frequent disconnections.

It’ll connect to my home wifi and then periodically disconnect every ~45 seconds only to reconnect five minutes later. No issues with the wifi on any other device in my house. And the funny thing is the iPhone continues to say it’s connected until you go to settings where it occasionally updates to say “No Internet Connection.” Perhaps it’s an issue with IOS 17? I’m hoping it’s not a hardware issue.

Toronto4112 via Apple Community Forums

The issue is prevalent, but not limited to 5GHz connections. While adjusting the channel width to a particular value does work, most people are simply having trouble accessing the internet while connected to the Wi-Fi network (no internet access).

iPhone 15 Pros apparently suffering from Wi-Fi Issues on 5GHz

Keep in mind that this issue is probably not limited to iOS 17.0.3. Older iOS 17 devices experienced the same issue, and it still hasn’t been resolved as of now. It’s possible that we may expect iOS 17.0.4 in the coming weeks to address the issue.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

Moore’s Law Is Dead has shed some light on Intel’s future plans and designations for various upcoming generations. Apparently, we might not see a successor to Arrow Lake for desktop until almost 2027.

Arrow Lake, Up to 24 Cores with no Hyperthreading & RUs

Starting off with Arrow Lake, which is Intel’s first generation on the LGA 1851 platform, MLID claims that Arrow Lake will feature up to 24 cores. This is similar to Raptor Lake, and Raptor Lake Refresh, though there are two extra LPE cores, but their inclusion is negligible.

Furthermore, Arrow Lake cuts off Hyperthreading and does not use Rentable Units (RUs). You can read our detailed article regarding Rentable Units here. The single-core uplift is expected to be 25%, with multi-core still undecided, given how Arrow Lake does not have hyperthreading.

Arrow Lake Details | MLID

Arrow Lake is based on TSMC’s N3B node, with some variants built using Intel’s own 20A process. The start of LGA-1851 could slip into 2025, as Arrow Lake is targeting a late 2024 launch.

Arrow Lake Refresh, Same Architecture but With 40 Cores

In early 2025, Intel will launch Lunar Lake based on N3B which is meant for power-efficient laptops. It is the spiritual successor to Lakefield and the Tiger Lake-U series of CPUs.

In the second half of 2025, 1 year after Arrow Lake, Intel will reinstate the lineup with the leaked 40-Core SKU. It is very similar to how Raptor Lake Refresh and Raptor Lake work in tandem to pave way for the next-big architecture, in this case, Nova Lake.

Arrow Lake Refresh Details | MLID

ARL-R could be almost 50% faster in multi-threaded workloads due to its insanely high core-counts. Sadly for Intel, it will launch next to Zen6. This is kind of similar to if Raptor Lake Refresh launched side by side with Zen5. That would have an absolute bloodbath for Team Blue.

Panther Lake, New Architecture but Reserved for Laptops

Panther Lake is the new Meteor Lake, seeing how Intel is repeating its strategy. Arrow Lake is the big architecture, Arrow Lake Refresh follows up. The next major overhaul comes in the form of a mobile-only series (Panther Lake), serving as a test run for its desktop counterpart (Nova Lake).

By the start of 2026, Intel will unveil Panther Lake which uses the new Cougar Cove P-Cores and Darkmont E-Cores. It apparently introduces a new tile layout and is exclusive to the laptop segment.

Panther Lake Details | MLID

Speaking of Cougar Cove, MLID reports that Cougar Cove might not feature RUs as well. In fact, this P-Core architecture is an enhanced version of Lion Cove. Just like how Redwood Cove (MTL) is a modified variant of Raptor Cove (RPL).

Nova Lake, the Architecture to Rule Them All

Nova Lake is the holy grail of all Intel things efficient and performant. These CPUs will indeed feature RUs, though we aren’t sure of the P-Core architecture yet. What we are sure of is the E-Core architecture, ‘Arctic Wolf‘, now that’s a cool name.

As MLID states, this is the fruit of Jim Keller’s efforts with Intel. Nova Lake targets a 20-40% single core uplift over Arrow Lake which is very much doable. The top variants feature 180MB/144MB of LLC, we’re not sure if this is Adamantine (L4) or stacked L3 tiles.

Nova Lake Details | MLID

Lastly, should Intel’s foundry catch up to TSMC, Nova Lake will debut using the Intel-18A-next node. On the off chance it doesn’t, TSMC’s N2P is the equivalent Intel will seek.

From a straight-up failed launch to selling 3 million copies within a week of its DLC release (Phantom Liberty), Cyberpunk’s renaissance story is one to tell. The game is shaping up to be a massive success, more like what it was originally intended to be.

CD Projekt Red is now looking to cash in on this opportunity, expanding the Night City beyond just the game itself. The developers of Cyberpunk have now partnered up with media group Anonymous Content, (who’ve previously produced award-winning shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot) to work on a live-action project.

At this point, nothing about the nature of this project has been publicly revealed. We do not know whether it will be a movie or a TV show, but it is still in its early stages of development. The studio is also looking for a screenwriter to narrate the entire story for the project, which suggests that the idea has not yet begun to be implemented practically.

It been said that the project “will be developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team,” but that’s not all for the franchise.

During the investor presentation today, CDPR’s SVP of business development, Michał Nowakowski, mentioned that the franchise is also closely working with Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk TV show, Edgerunners. However, due to legal bounds, we may have to wait a bit more.

We have an appetite to do more in the transmedia [space], so in linear visual animation or live action, and those plans have not changed, so when we are ready you may expect to see more announcements in that regard coming from us”.

Michał Nowakowski

To be clear, CDPR has a lot on its plate. It is currently planning the sequel to CP2077, codenamed Project Orion, which is in its “[initial] conceptualization stage“, like the live-action project. This is all we know at this point, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as any new information on the project surfaces online.

Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 2 at the MadeByGoogle ’23 event. The new watch features a number of upgrades over the original Watch (1), including a more durable design, improved battery life, and new health and fitness tracking features.

Pixel Watch 2 | Google

Google has introduced a continuous electrodermal activity (CEDA) sensor in the Pixel Watch 2. This sensor tracks the electrical conductivity of your skin, which can be used to measure your body’s response to stress.

Google says that the CEDA sensor can be used to track a variety of metrics, including stress levels throughout the day and identify activities that are causing you stress.

Other than that, the Watch 2 also features a number of other new health and fitness tracking features, such as an upgraded heart rate sensor that is now a multi-path sensor compared to a single-path version.

It can now take readings from multiple spots on your wrist for greater accuracy, and Google says it’s up to 40% more accurate in vigorous activities like HIIT, spinning and rowing. There’s also a new skin temperature sensor that will deliver “better insights” into your sleep and wellness.

The Pixel Watch 2 starts at $350 for the GPS version and $399 for the LTE model. The color options include white, black, gold, silver, blue and hazel. The watch is available to pre-order now, and will start shipping October 12th.

This year has not been kind to the game development industry, with many studios facing layoffs. The list is long, but major studios such as 343, SEGA, CD Projekt Red, Firaxis, Riot, Take-Two, EA, and Ubisoft have been affected, along with many indie studios. While this does not necessarily mean that the industry is declining, it can actually be detrimental to existing projects.

Another studio that is reportedly being added to this list is Naughty Dog, the developers behind Uncharted and The Last of Us. According to Kotaku’s sources, Naughty Dog is laying off its employees short of their contract periods. However, the staff has been told to keep the news under wraps till the end of this month when their contract is terminated officially.

Sources tell Kotaku that no severance is being offered for those currently laid off, and that impacted developers as well as remaining employees are being pressured to keep the news quiet. Their contracts won’t be officially terminated until the end of October and they’ll be expected to work through the rest of the month.

As a result of this, ~25 employees were affected, not including the full-time staff, which still remains at 400. However, the worst aspect of this news is how The Last of Us’ rumored multiplayer mode, Factions might not see the light of the day due to the downsizing. Although the layoffs do tend to disturb ongoing projects, the reasoning for this particular scenario is partially different.

Last year, the project was positioned to be as big as a standalone multiplayer game, not just a game mode. Naughty Dog even citied it as the “most ambitious project the studio has ever taken.” But in June, it was reported that an internal review by Bungie prompted Sony to pull resources away from the project, the future of which is now “basically on ice.”

Nothing has been said officially, but the future for the project doesn’t seem that all too bright. With that said, we will make sure to keep you updated on all developments as new information becomes available.
