Microsoft Reportedly Considering Xbox Achievement System Overhaul

Microsoft is reportedly considering the addition of Platinum Achievements (similar to the Platinum Trophy on the PlayStation Network, which you earn after fully beating a particular game) to the Xbox ecosystem, to revamp the popular achievement system that has been an integral part of the Xbox gaming experience for years.

This news was discussed during the latest episode of The Xbox Two, where co-host Jez Corden revealed that he had discussions with an Xbox executive at Gamescom 2023 regarding the potential introduction of Platinum Achievements.

The executive’s response indicated that Microsoft is indeed interested in giving the achievement system an overhaul. However, an overhaul of the achievement system and the addition of Platinum Achievements depends on the company’s priorities and available resources.

I’ll tell you right now, I did speak to an Xbox exec at Gamescom, specifically about the Platinum achievements. They said they want to do it. It’s just a matter of priorities in time, so I do think the Xbox Platinum achievement and improvements to the achievement system will come.

It’s just a matter of getting through the other stuff they want to do right now … I think we are probably getting to a point where it’s like, ‘Okay, we’ve got to do this Platinum achievement stuff now.’ So, I do think they are going to do it. They’ve told me they want to do it, and it is just a matter of time and bandwidth.”

So, it is clear that Microsoft wants to do it, but they have other important things to do first. They have some other tasks to finish before they start working on this update for the system. But making Xbox’s achievements better is still something they want to do in the future.

Achievements are a core feature of modern gaming, serving as both a motivation for players to explore and master games as well as a way for developers to set unique challenges. These achievements can range from accomplishing specific in-game tasks, uncovering hidden secrets, or even completing games in unconventional ways, like speedrunning or playing without defeating enemies.

Some players take pride in completing all achievements in a game, making them a significant part of the gaming experience.

Unlike traditional game secrets that might unlock new features or advantages, achievements primarily serve as a badge of honor, displaying a player’s accomplishments on their online profile. For Xbox, these achievements are associated with a Gamertag, allowing players to showcase their gaming prowess to the world.

That’s all the information we have for now about the potential changes in the Xbox achievement system. However, we will update you as soon as more information about this becomes available. Until then, please let us know your thoughts about this news and what changes you would like to see in the Xbox achievement system in the future.
