Intel May Launch Meteor Lake ‘Core Ultra’ CPUs at the Intel Innovation Event Next Month

Intel’s upcoming Meteor Lake platform aims to compete fiercely against AMD’s Phoenix APUs. Meteor Lake is important to Intel as it will determine team blue’s future architectures. We still have a lot more to learn regarding Meteor Lake and as such, Intel will have a session explicitly reserved for these CPUs next month.

Meteor Lake Presentation at the Innovation Event 2023

Over at Intel’s website, we can find the schedule for all events planned during the Innovation Event. The session titled ‘Intel Client Hardware Roadmap and the Rise of AI‘ is more exciting than it sounds. In the description, details regarding Meteor Lake and the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence can be seen.

The type of session is defined as a ‘Lecture‘, so expect some more insight regarding the VPU in Meteor Lake. For the unaware, Intel’s Ryzen AI equivalent will be hosted by the SoC tile and will power Low-Power AI Inference. This includes features such as:

  • Live Noise Suppression
  • Live Background Removal
  • Video Upscaling
  • Auto-Framing

Possible Meteor Lake Unveil

Intel is known for revealing its next-generation CPUs at the yearly Innovation Event. Last year, we saw the launch of Raptor Lake. This year, it is probable that Intel will launch the 14th Generation of CPUs. In that sense, we should expect at the bare minimum, some details or even a full-fledged Meteor Lake launch.

Meteor Lake is based on Intel’s 4nm process (Intel 4) and uses a true 3D chiplet design termed Foveros. This makes Intel the first mainstream CPU company to do so, since X3D by AMD is hybrid 2.5D+3D.

Architecture-wise, the performance cores will be based on Intel’s RWC (Redwood Cove) architecture. This alone should net Meteor Lake a 10-15% IPC Uplift. The efficient cores will feature the Crestmont architecture.

As described in a previous article, Meteor Lake is expected to reach 5GHz. That is impressive as the architecture is primarily focused on efficiency. Based on the Xe-LPG architecture, the inclusion of 8 Xe Cores will lead to a compute power of 4.5 TFLOPS, higher than AMD’s Phoenix R9 7940HS.
