Pixel 8 Pro Allegedly Features a Worse Display Than Its Predecessors

Earlier this year, we had reported on how the Google may look to adopt a more flat display with the Pixel 8 Pro series, and now, courtesy of Android Authority, we have news on the display specifications for the phone.

Like each year, our expectations for Google’s displays increase. After all, Pixels have inarguably had one of the better looking displays on the market. However, this year is different. The Pixel 8 will reportedly have a smaller display than its predecessor, the Pixel 7, while the Pixel 8 Pro will have a lower resolution display.

The Pixel 8’s display will now measure 6.17 inches, down from 6.31 inches on the Pixel 7. The resolution will remain the same at FHD+ (2400×1080). The Pixel 8 Pro, meanwhile, will measure 6.7 inches, but the resolution will drop from 3120×1440 on the Pixel 7 Pro to 2992×1344. This will result in a lower pixel-per-inch density of 490 on the Pixel 8 Pro, compared to 512 on the Pixel 7 Pro.

In terms of other display features, both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are expected to support a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the Pixel 8 Pro is also expected to have a higher peak brightness of 1600 nits, compared to 1400 nits on the Pixel 8.

These changes to the display on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are somewhat surprising, as Google has typically been praised for the quality of its smartphone displays. However, it is possible that Google has made these changes in order to reduce the cost of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, or focus on other aspects of the phone they’re lagging behind.

The Pixel 8 series will be released later this year, and we will make sure to keep you updated on that. But, till then, it remains to be seen whether the changes to the display will have a negative impact on the overall user experience.
