OnePlus and Samsung Flagships Promise More Updates Than Google’s Latest Pixel

Google Pixel smartphones have become synonymous with the best Android software, offering a clean, fast, and reliable user experience. However, while the Pixel’s software may be the best, it lags behind its competitors, such as Samsung and OnePlus, in terms of updates.

Google has promised its Pixel users three years of OS updates and five years of security patches, while Samsung and OnePlus offer four years of updates (OS). This may not seem like a big difference, but it can be significant for users who rely on their devices for work or personal use.

It’s worth noting that while Google guarantees “at least” three years of major updates and five years of security patches, Samsung and OnePlus only guarantee “up to” four years of major updates and five years of security patches. However, Google has never really provided updates past the “minimum” deadline. This time too, the Pixel 4a (the oldest Pixel to receive Android 14) will be getting its last OS update. With this in mind, it seems as if Google doesn’t act smartly with its next Pixel lineup, they may very well be beaten by Samsung and OnePlus at their own game. While it is true that Google Tensor lacks a bit behind the latest Qualcomm flagship chipsets, it is important to note that with Google manufacturing their own chipsets, they have the clear advantage of optimization, and so, they shouldn’t hesitate to catch up to the competition. 

The obvious downside to this is how the difference in update frequency also affects the lifespan of the device. With only three years of updates, the Pixel is likely to become outdated and slow in comparison to devices that receive four years of updates. This is especially true for those who like to keep their devices for longer periods of time, as the difference in updates can add up over the years.

Another disadvantage of the Pixel’s limited updates is that it may not receive the latest Android features and improvements. Google releases new versions of Android each year, and these updates often bring with them new features and enhancements. However, with only three years of updates, the Pixel may not receive these new features, which can be frustrating for users who want the latest and greatest.

Apple has a clear advantage over Android when it comes to software updates and support. Apple’s commitment to software updates and security is unmatched in the industry, with the company providing up to five years of updates for its older devices. This means that even older iPhone models receive the latest software updates, bug fixes, and security patches, which helps to keep them running smoothly and securely. Well, what else does a normal consumer want from a phone?
