Vivo X90 Series Released With the World’s First 1-inch Smartphone Camera Sensor

Vivo has released some incredible flagships in the past, and while its last X80 series didn’t reinvent the wheel, it did bring substantial improvements over its predecessor. The newly released Vivo X90 and X90 Pro also follows that trend, sharing a lot of series’ core design and hardware philosophies, but at the same time manage to bring a lot of upgrades to the table.

Let’s start with the similarities first. Both the phones now come with the Dimensity 9200, which is also MediaTek’s most recent flagship SoCs. As for the display, the phones share a 6.78-inch curved QHD+ AMOLED panel.  According to the phone’s marketing material, the display is capable of 10-bit color output along with 120Hz refresh rate support.

Vivo X90 Pro

As for the differences, there seem to be enough to warrant the X90 Pro’s significantly higher price. Starting with the camera, the Vivo X90 Pro gets the Sony IMX989 (50MP) as the main sensor. It is also the world’s first 1-inch camera sensor which debuted with the Xiaomi 12 series earlier this year. Apart from the main sensor, there’s also a 50MP 2x telephoto shooter and a 12MP Ultrawide.

The base Vivo X90 however misses out on the 1-inch camera sensor, and instead features the 50MP IMX866 as the main sensor. The camera package also includes a 12MP ultrawide and a 12MP 2x fixed-focus telephoto lens.

These differences are also seen in the battery and charging department, where the Vivo X90 Pro gets a 4,870mAh battery with 50W wireless charging. The cheaper Vivo X90 drops wireless charging and includes a slightly smaller 4,810mAh battery. However, both the devices feature 120W wired fast charging.

Pricing and Availability

The phones have just launched in China and priced accordingly in Yuan, and there’s no word on international availability yet. Although the Yuan figures can still give us a rough estimate of the phone’s pricing in different regions.

The base Vivo X90 starts at 3,699 yuan (~$517) for the 8GB/128GB variant, stretching all the way up to 4,999 yuan (~$700) for the 12GB/512GB model.

The Vivo X90 Pro starts at a quite steeper 4,999 yuan (~$700) for the 8GB/256GB variant, going all the way up to 5,999 yuan (~$840) for the 12GB/512GB model.
