Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Chip Will Feature a 20 Percent Performance Boost Over Qualcomm’s Last Flagship

Namely the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1

Qualcomm’s last flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was a hit-and-a-miss. While it had a decent performance uptick over last gen, it proved to be on the hotter side, and even disappointed with its efficiency figures.  Qualcomm will likely improve all these aspects with its next gen flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

According to recent rumors, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is going to be very energy efficient, even better than the recently released Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. Now, according to a new rumor from tipster Yogesh Brar, the Gen 2 chip will feature a 20 percent performance boost over the 8+ Gen 1 chip.

Moreover, according to the tipster the efficiency figures of the upcoming chip will be in the same ballpark as the 8+ Gen 1 chip, given both of them are manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm node.

Previous leaks have also reported on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 core configuration, likely featuring the following setup.

  • 1x Cortex-X3 core running at 3.20GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A715 cores running at 2.80GHz
  • 2x Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.80GHz
  • 3x Cortex-A510 running at 2.00GHz

This deviates slightly from Qualcomm’s usual 1+3+4 tri-cluster CPU arrangement used for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. Instead of having two big Cortex-A710 cores, and four energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip opts for four big cortex cores (2x A715 + 2x A710), and three energy efficient cores. Obviously, the new Cortex-X3 core, built on a new ARM architecture also helps in achieving the improved performance figures.

As for the scores, they are plenty impressive, and a decent step-up from Samsung’s last generation S22 series. The upcoming Galaxy S23 supposedly gets a single-core score of 1524, and a multi-core score of 4597. While this is still behind Apple’s A15 Bionic Geekbench scores, it does manage to comfortably beat phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

We also got a glimpse of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s performance in a previous Geekbench leak, featuring the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23. Although, the chip’s official reveal is just around the corner, with Qualcomm kicking off its Snapdragon Summit from 15th November.
