After the A17 Pro was initially put to the test, the results were not particularly intriguing, with problems of overheating surfacing online. Not only that, but the chipset failed to reach its maximum potential due to excessive thermal throttling, to the point where it struggled to keep up in even the most basic of testing scenarios.

Apple addressed the issue in the new iOS 17.0.3 update, which apparently seemed to fix the issue, somewhat. However, the more important speculation was: did Apple push back the performance numbers on the 15 Pros to stop them from overheating. Well, as it turns out, no.

Recently, after the 17.0.3 update was shipped out, YouTuber ITSub tested the performance and battery life of the iPhone 15 Pro against the iPhone 14 Pro, both running the same version of iOS.

Not only did Apple fix the issues with excessive heat generation, but it managed to bump up the performance too. To compare the graphical performance of the iPhone 15 Pro, it was put to test under the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, where it managed to obtain a quite decent score of 4274. This is ~13% improvement over the 3757 on iOS 17.0.2.

The iPhone 14 Pro also seemed to have gained some sort of an improvement, gaining a small 8% advantage over the previous best score. All in all, the iPhone 15 Pro was ~27% better than the last year’s iPhone 14 Pro.

As for battery life, the update did bring about some degree of improvement, but not enough to make a significant difference compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. However, the iPhone 15 Pro did see about 3-4% more than that on iOS 17.0.2.

From a broader perspective, iOS 17.0.3 did seem to have addressed most of the problems that people had with their phones, but at the same time, also has ignored some, such as the Wi-Fi disconnection issues. Not to mention how, the battery life is still not better than last year’s iPhone 14 Pro, despite having a supposedly “more-efficient” 3nm SoC.

The iPhone 15 Pro series, while featuring some of the most “practical” changes, did not receive the praise that iPhones usually do. Days after its release, the phone was plagued by reports of overheating and thermal throttling. While it was the first phone to feature a 3nm SoC, the A17 Pro seemed to do more harm than good.

Apple addressed the issue last week, citing that some apps weren’t properly configured and that it would take a bit of time for the phones during their setup period, during which they would require extra processing, leading to slightly more heat generation than usual. Then, on October 5th, Apple released iOS 17.0.3, fixing a lot of the issues people had with the new phones, while surprisingly keeping the performance numbers almost the same.

But the update then led to a plethora of new issues, particularly with the Wi-Fi connection on the phone. On Apple’s Community Forums and Reddit, we have seen how users have been reporting that while connected to Wi-Fi, most of the content does not seem to load. While reconnecting sometimes does the job, others have experienced frequent disconnections.

It’ll connect to my home wifi and then periodically disconnect every ~45 seconds only to reconnect five minutes later. No issues with the wifi on any other device in my house. And the funny thing is the iPhone continues to say it’s connected until you go to settings where it occasionally updates to say “No Internet Connection.” Perhaps it’s an issue with IOS 17? I’m hoping it’s not a hardware issue.

Toronto4112 via Apple Community Forums

The issue is prevalent, but not limited to 5GHz connections. While adjusting the channel width to a particular value does work, most people are simply having trouble accessing the internet while connected to the Wi-Fi network (no internet access).

Keep in mind that this issue is probably not limited to iOS 17.0.3. Older iOS 17 devices experienced the same issue, and it still hasn’t been resolved as of now. It’s possible that we may expect iOS 17.0.4 in the coming weeks to address the issue.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

After Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro‘s overheating fiasco, people are reporting how their screens would randomly go black after they’ve plugged in their phones to charge. Now, before you go blaming the USB Type-C port, this problem seems to be consistent along the iOS 17 lineup of phones.

Apple’s new iOS 17 is LOADED with bugs, and while this may seem normal, a plethora of reports from all directions is certainly concerning for the most popular smartphone company in the world. Now, the issue of black screens might not affect a lot of people, but it sure is frustrating.

In a Reddit post, a user stated that their phone, after updating to iOS 17, started randomly going black, with a small part of the clock showing in red. They also mentioned that they have experienced this issue on their brother’s phone as well.

We often talk about “the Apple way” and how this phrase is synonymous with “perfection,” however the company has surely disappointed in recent times. The new iPhones have been plagued with some of the worst user experiences ever seen in a product launch of this magnitude.

The issue of the screen going blank when connected to a charger might be related to the new “StandBy mode” on iOS 17, but it is rare to hear about iOS having such major bugs. As one user explained in the thread “It happened to me a few times too, and I think I figured it out why. The system wants to trigger Standby Mode if you hold it at an angle or the phone thinks its horizontal, and it results in this issue.

Since this is the first release of iOS, and since the author has written about how this issue started after the iOS 17 update, we can expect Apple to address it in future updates. Till then, we will make sure to keep you updated as new information is available.

Several iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro owners expressed concerns about their smartphones overheating and running at excessively high temperatures during the past week. Apple has acknowledged these issues and promised a software update to address them.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple has confirmed that the new titanium construction of the iPhone 15 Pro is not responsible for any problems with heating. The upcoming iOS 17 software upgrade, which the company claims does not impact performance in any way to address iPhone temperature issues, is currently in beta testing.

Apple said it’s common for an iPhone to run hotter than usual for the first few days in a statement given to Forbes and later shared with 9to5Mac. It has been previously addressed how iOS’s background indexing of photographs, searches, and other data causes this issue.

iPhone 15 Pro’s exploded view | Apple

Furthermore, Apple claims to have discovered a fault in iOS 17 that worsens the overheating issue for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro customers. The company has promised that this issue will be fixed in an upcoming software update.

Apple also claimed to 9to5Mac that recent changes to select third-party apps are the root of the problem. The firm claims it is communicating with the affected programmers directly in order to resolve the problems. Apple claims that Asphalt 9, Instagram, and Uber are among the apps that cause iPhones to overheat due to excessive CPU use. On September 27, Instagram released an update to address the issue, as reported by Apple.

We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity.

We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.

9to5Mac also reported that, contrary to prior rumours, the titanium build of the iPhone 15 Pro is not to blame for any overheating issues. Compared to prior iPhones made of stainless steel, the company claims that the new design improves heat dissipation. This is probably because of the upgraded aluminium sub-structure inside.

Apple concludes by emphasising that consumers should not worry about their iPhones’ security or long-term performance being affected in any way. The iOS operating system has a powerful mechanism to avoid heating up. iOS will attempt to protect internal components by cooling them down if they become too hot.

There’s been no official indication of when this iOS 17 upgrade (presumably iOS 17.0.3) will be released, but we anticipate it won’t be too much longer.

Apple has just now made available to the public iOS 17, iOS 17.0.1, and iOS 17.0.2. iOS 17.1 is now in beta testing and is scheduled for release by the end of October. An article in Forbes claims that iOS 17.1 “does not involve reducing performance in order to address the issue of the iPhone’s temperature.

Before the release of the newest Apple devices, industry analysts and insiders predicted that the pricing for the iPhones would be increased this year, keeping in line with the global economic crisis. The iPhone 15 Pros are the only smartphones in the world powered by the a 3nm SoC, and that did incur a premium cost for Apple. Not to mention the titanium frame and how it doesn’t come cheap!

iPhone 15 Pro’s Titanium frame | Apple

Surprisingly, when these phones were announced, Apple surprised everyone by keeping the same pricing policy as before – or so it seemed.

According to industry insider, @Tech_Reve, most of the credit goes to Samsung. Earlier, we reported on how Samsung was looking to reduce it’s NAND flash production due to an imbalance in supply and demand. Turns out that a few misjudgments in Samsung’s management decisions led to the company postponing it’s reduction policy.

How this helped Apple was that they were able to secure memory components at relatively cheaper prices, apparently half of what they had to pay for the iPhone 14 series. Since these memory components make up almost 10% of iPhone’s Bill of Materials (BOM), Apple now had the flexibility to improve it’s hardware and introduce better features within the same price bracket.

Now, the margins were still not enough for Apple as far as the Pro Max is concerned. Apple did dampen the blow by completely scraping off the 128GB model and increasing the minimum storage capacity to 256GB. This way, they maintained the illusion of keeping the same pricing policy and also covered their costs.

It would have been interesting to see how things would have turned out if Apple had increased prices, citing the Titanium frame and the A17 Pro as reasons. As it is, Apple is facing some problems with its new phones. Some users reported discoloration around the buttons on the Titanium frame, allegedly due to uneven PVD coating. Others complained about the frame being a fingerprint magnet, the phone overheating when stressed, or even swelling up on normal use.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

It’s been almost a week since the iPhone 15 was launched, and although it released to positive reviews, things aren’t looking good for Apple’s new flagship device in the real world. Previously, some of the first owners of iPhone 15 reported several issues including titanium discoloration and fragile build quality.

Then we came to the overheating era where every other hour there was new information about the how the iPhone 15 Pros were getting uncomfortably warm. And if that wasn’t enough, iPhone 15 users are now experiencing a much bigger issue; Swelling.

In a recent Reddit post on the iPhone subreddit, u/LeatherCheerio402 shared an image of their iPhone 15 which appears to be bulging out of the phone’s titanium case:

The disappointed iPhone 15 owner took matters to Apple where he was asked to take the phone to their place of purchase which in their case was Verizon. On the other hand, the user suspects Verizon to have a similar response leaving them with a swelled iPhone 15.

Several other users have also started reporting overheating issues with their iPhone 15 when charging their phone or even gaming. A user on Reddit proved this issue by thermally checking their iPhone 12 Pro’s temperature after a short phone call. And the results were quite concerning.

The constant here is iOS 17 which is what the iPhone 12 above was updated to and all iPhone 15 models ship with, so perhaps the software is a factor in this overheating debacle too? But not more so than the hardware since we already know the titanium frame is to blame for that. However, the fact that this iPhone got hot on a call which is exactly what happened to the first iPhone 15 Pros as well is quite the coincidence.

It looks like there’s a lot Apple needs to address regarding the safety concerns of using the brand-new iPhone 15. And from what it seems the issues are just getting started. In fact, one user shared a pretty weird experience when unboxing their iPhone 15 Pro Max:

iPhone 15 Pro Max Drawing

In the above Reddit post, there appears to be a drawing of a duck etched into the iPhone 15 camera. For a company like Apple, it’s quite surprising how they sold an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth $1200+ with a “Duck Lens” without noticing.

iPhone launches have always seemed to surprise us in different ways. However, with the iPhone 15, the negatives outweigh the positives. It started with the titanium being a fingerprint magnet then quickly turned into weird paint issues, but even that could’ve been attributed to weak QC. Then came the build quality problem and now overheating to this degree (no pun intended) on top of all that. Certainly the most eventful iPhone launch we’ve had in years.

Since its public release, the iPhone 15 Pro has been making headlines, not because of the new, heavily marketed “titanium” body but due to its issues with overheating and thermal throttling. Initially, TSMC’s “A17 Pro” was blamed for this, but deeper insights revealed that Apple is the real culprit here.

Yesterday, Ming-Chi Kuo reported on how Apple’s cooling system just wasn’t efficient enough to cope with the heat dissipated from the main chip. It’s important to note that this year, Apple significantly increased the power draw for the A17 Pro by ~4W.

While one can expect such issues while gaming, it has now come to light that a user apparently experienced really high temperatures on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, not while stressing out the chip, but during a mere five-minute phone call.

Within five minutes of using the phone, it reached 108°F, which corresponds to approximately 42°C. In the Reddit thread, the user also discussed how the phone would frequently become so hot in their pocket that they had to take it out.

Now, to clarify, this was a problem with previous generations of iPhones – they would become exceptionally hot while charging, even with a 20W charger. However, with the design changes made this year, it appears that nothing is going Apple’s way.

Surely, they would have tested the phone keeping these parameters in mind, but reports from all directions are certainly concerning. On top of that, Apple has introduced support for some console games this year, one of which – RE4 is priced at $60.

It will be interesting to see how Apple manages all of this. They’ll probably ship out a software update, but that would only make sense if the performance is restricted, and the power draw is limited. The graph below perfectly sums up how significant a leap Apple has taken this year in terms of A17 Pro’s TDP.

People often talk about how Apple rarely makes major changes within the iPhone lineup – well, now we know why. Apple’s design philosophy, whether it be the software or the hardware, has more or less remained the same for the longest time now, and this year, the Cupertinian tech giant decided to switch things up a bit.

Apple went with an unconventional titanium design this time around for the main frame, ditching the stainless steel, apparently for better durability, however it negatively impacted the overall heat dissipation. To create a lighter feel for the phone, it appears that compromises were made within the phone’s internal cooling mechanism.

Furthermore, this has led to the issue of thermal throttling with so much heat generated that only on benchmarking applications, the phone starts to reach an upward of 47C, which for some may be too hot to handle, not to mention how the performance drastically drops due to thermal throttling.

A17 Pro | Apple

Initially, it was speculated that the thermal throttling and reduced performance had something to do with the substandard chips that TSMC had fabricated, particularly due to excessive leakage of current. Some analysts went as far as to say that TSMC should have switched over from FinFET to GAA earlier. However, this is not the case.

In fact, the issue lies in how the phone is designed internally. The smaller 6.1″ 15 Pro has the same heating problems, with almost identical trends as the larger 6.7″ 15 Pro Max, meaning that adequate cooling wasn’t provided.

In fact, for benchmarking the A17 Pro, you’d need to attach a separate fan to the phone to achieve numbers that show actual performance improvements over the A16 Bionic. While it is possible that Apple may address these issues with some form of a software update, it will most likely come at a cost in terms of performance.

It remains to be seen what Apple will make of all this. After all, the iPhone is the best-selling phone in this market, and they must have a plan to address these issues.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

The iPhone 15 Pro revealed earlier this month, powered by Apple’s latest and greatest A17 Pro was touted to be capable of playing console-level games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 Remake.

At this point, it seems like the Resident Evil IV Remake will cost you $60 to run on Apple’s flagship devices – the same price as the console versions. While this, in itself, isn’t an issue since the pricing is consistent across all platforms, it does raise the question of whether the experience on the iPhone will be worth the price

RE4 Remake Pricing on iPhone | Capcom via TouchArcade

Many tests have concluded how the “powerful” chipset inside the 15 Pro(s) is no more than an overclocked A16 Bionic, it does showcase a degree of upgrade when it comes to graphical performance. Regardless of that, some testing has recently revealed how the A17 Pro suffers from severe thermal throttling, and a lack of efficient cooling solution meant that the device reaches ~48C in benchmarking applications, which is HOT, even to hold.

YouTuber TheRelaxingEnd recently tested Genshin Impact on the iPhone 15 Pro where the phone failed to hold up, and severe stuttering was noticed, mostly because of thermal throttling. It has been said that this is a major issue if an external fan isn’t attached.

The Resident Evil IV Remake is currently available to pre-order on the App Store, with expected release around December. The game won’t be entirely paid however. If you do want to test it out, there will be a free 700MB version as the demo, but it’ll be limited in some way or the other.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage on the other hand will reportedly release around the start of next year. This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

This year’s iPhone 15 series was the first in the industry to feature a 3nm chipset, the A17 Pro. While it does showcase a level of upgrade over last year’s A16 Bionic, it does so at the expense of energy efficiency, which isn’t something you’d expect to come hand in hand with smaller chipsets.

Initial reviews for the iPhone 15 Pro(s) do tend to give the impression that the power consumption is notably high in large cores, however the smaller cores do make up for the lost efficiency. But, how does all that affect battery performance?

Apple’s Priorities Might Have Changed, but the ‘Plus’ Is Still the King

Mrwhosetheboss, like each year, conducted a battery test on the current-gen iPhones, comparing them to ones from recent years. In this test, he evaluated the iPhone 15 Pro Max, 15 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 14 Pro, 15 Plus, the vanilla 15 and 13 Pro Max.

The test comprised normal day-to-day applications, similar to what a normal person would do, such as watching videos on TikTok and YouTube, surfing the internet, listening to music on Spotify, and playing games, etc.

These are the results on how Apple’s latest flagships from the last three years stack up against each other.

  • iPhone 15 Plus / 13hrs 19mins
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max / 11hrs 41mins
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max / 11hrs 19mins
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max / 10hrs 54mins
  • iPhone 15 / 9hrs 57mins
  • iPhone 15 Pro / 9hrs 20mins

While these numbers are by no means ‘bad’ in any way, they do go to show how Apple’s priorities have changed within the last few years, evident by a narrow deviation from the mean. However, if you still need the best of the best when it comes to battery life, well, Apple has it – the iPhone 15 Plus.

The phone is now Apple’s new battery champ after the iPhone 13 Pro Max from last year. Thirteen hours of screen-on time are really great for a phone, considering how most of the competition fails to even meet this without significantly bumping up the battery size

As for the relatively higher differences between the first and second, well, it all comes down to the output you’re getting on the other side of the phone. For starters, the Plus doesn’t come with a ProMotion display, meaning that it will use less power at 60Hz when comparing it to 120Hz. Keep in mind that the LTPO displays on the ProMotion phones have the ability to dial all the way down to 10Hz when required, so it can actually benefit you in some ways too.

The other reason is how the Plus just has the older, more energy-efficient A16 Bionic, and since it isn’t a Pro, it doesn’t come with all those premium features too. It’s important to note that this test wasn’t ‘entirely’ fair since the iPhone 15 Pro Max had the SIM in it for the test, but as is clarified at the end of the video, it wouldn’t have made a significant difference on Wi-Fi.

This test further cements the notion how Apple has some of the most well-optimized phones on the planet. While there are iPhones from 2021 that still stack up against the very best in competition, the other side has phones that fail to keep up after some years of use.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
