Ubisoft is Making 11 Assassin’s Creed Games This Decade – Here’s Everything You Should Know

The Assassin’s Creed franchise, known for its rich historical settings and immersive gameplay, is set to expand with a slew of upcoming titles. Ubisoft, the publisher behind the popular series, has already revealed some projects in the pipeline, but recent reports suggest that there are even more Assassin’s Creed games in development than previously known.

According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is currently working on a total of 11 Assassin’s Creed games, encompassing single-player, multiplayer, and virtual reality experiences. While some of these titles have been officially announced with codenames, others remain shrouded in secrecy. Let’s break down every title that’s either confirmed to rumored to be in making.

1. Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Release Date: October 12, 2023

The highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Mirage, set in Baghdad, is the first game on the list and is scheduled to release on October 12, 2023. We already know a lot about this game since its marketing campaign has begun and details about gameplay have been revealed extensively.

This new installment in the Assassin’s Creed series is expected to return to the franchise’s original roots, focusing on stealth gameplay and featuring parkour mechanics akin to the Ezio games. The game will be set in 9th Century Baghdad, featuring a younger version of the character Basim from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, a few decades prior to his appearance in that game.

Mirage will present a more contained and intimate setting compared to the expansive worlds of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Odyssey. Ubisoft is planning for a smaller, densely populated Baghdad divided into four distinct districts. For the first time in the series, players will be able to visit The Alamut, the home of the assassins, which lies outside of the city.

The gameplay elements echo the series’ earlier mechanics, featuring social stealth, swift parkour, and agile assassinations. The city design and the addition of new tools like detection mines and blow darts support the game’s emphasis on stealth.

Parkour plays a significant role in Mirage, with Ubisoft promising a faster-paced, agile experience. Assassinations will be more prominent, featuring ‘Black Box Missions’ that allow for flexible approaches to taking out targets.

Ubisoft has confirmed that Mirage will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store

Three editions of the game will be available: Standard Edition ($50), Deluxe Edition ($60), which includes Prince of Persia-inspired DLC, and the Collector’s Case ($150), featuring a Basim figurine, map of Baghdad, exclusive steel book, and more. Pre-ordering will grant exclusive access to a ’40 Thieves’ side quest.

2. Assassin’s Creed Nexus

Release Date: Holiday 2023

Another notable addition is Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, a virtual reality Assassin’s Creed game currently in production.

It will be a fully immersive, virtual reality experience, scheduled for a holiday season launch in 2023. Aiming to provide players a chance to live through the eyes of some of the series’ most iconic characters, the game offers a novel narrative format, which is constructed exclusively for VR platforms.

Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR will allow players to assume the roles of three legendary characters from the series: Ezio, Kassandra, and Connor. Each character has a unique approach to combat and gameplay mechanics, providing a varied and fresh experience for players.

The game’s mechanics will remain faithful to the franchise’s signature elements like climbing, parkour, and the “Leap of Faith.” However, being a VR title, players will have the freedom to customize their gameplay style and pace.

The game’s storyline involves Abstergo Industries‘ efforts to retrieve lost artifacts that could manipulate people’s beliefs, tasking players with undermining these plans. Players will experience the narrative in different historical periods, including the Italian Renaissance, Ancient Greece, and the American Revolution, depending on the active character.

The game’s Creative Director, David Votypka, confirmed that although the game doesn’t feature an open-world design, it strongly encourages self-directed exploration within historical environments.

Ubisoft unveiled the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR during its Ubisoft Forward event on June 12, 2023. Although the CGI trailer didn’t reveal gameplay footage, it offered an idea of the VR combat experience and the characters’ distinct abilities.

The game is set to be available on Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 2, and Meta Quest 3 devices. The specific details about the game’s availability on other platforms, such as PSVR 2, are yet to be disclosed.

3. Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade

Release Date: 2023

Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade is the first open-world Assassin’s Creed game for iOS and Android platforms. Set in Ancient China during 215 B.C., players take on the role of Xia, a new assassin, as they protect their homeland of Xionanu and experience the cultural exchanges of East and West Xianyang.

The gameplay will have core Assassin’s Creed mechanics, including parkour, climbing, and combat, along with Xia’s unique arsenal of Chinese spears, double swords, and bows. The game’s customization feature will allow players to create their own assassin’s appearance.

While the release date remains undisclosed, a closed beta is available for sign-ups.

4. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red

Release Date: 2024

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is anticipated to finally bring to life a setting long requested by franchise fans: feudal Japan. However, the game is still years away from release.

Ubisoft Quebec, which also developed Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, is once again leading the development for this major flagship game. Jonathan Dumont, who served as the creative director for both of these previous titles, will reprise his role for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red.

Rumors regarding Assassin’s Creed’s venture into feudal Japan have been circulating since July 2022, sparking major anticipation among the fanbase. The reveal of Assassin’s Creed Red at the Ubisoft Forward showcase in 2022 brought these rumors to reality.

The reveal trailer featured an all-new assassin character set in ancient Japan, equipped with traditional weaponry and garbed in black Assassin Order robes. It also hinted at the return of the Animus, a narrative device that allows the exploration of past and present timelines.

The game’s setting was confirmed through visual cues in the trailer. Marc-Alexis Cote, the developer behind several successful Assassin’s Creed games, teased that players will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a powerful Shinobi fantasy.

Leaked information about Assassin’s Creed Red suggests players may have the option to choose between two characters: a samurai and a shinobi. The latter is understood to be an African refugee who adopts the Creed’s ways. It remains uncertain whether the game will allow character swapping during gameplay or whether players will have to lock in their choice for the entirety of the game, as in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Red is said to focus more on stealth gameplay, while still encouraging the open-world map exploration and RPG elements seen in recent Assassin’s Creed titles.

5. Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe

Release Date: 2025/2026

The details about Assassin’s Creed Hexe are limited to a short teaser trailer, leading fans to conjecture about the possible settings, themes, and changes. The trailer, while only 30 seconds long, paints a strikingly different tone for the game. It presents eerie imagery of an Assassin’s insignia made from broken branches above an open flame.

While Ubisoft has not yet officially announced the setting for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, a rumor reported by Bloomberg suggests that the game might be set in Central Europe during the 16th century.

Ubisoft Montreal, the creator of the original Assassin’s Creed game and the team behind the successful Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is developing Assassin’s Creed Hexe. Clint Hocking, known for his work on Ubisoft’s high-profile titles such as Far Cry 2 and Watch Dogs Legion, is leading the game’s development as creative director.

6. Assassin’s Creed Codename Invictus

Release Date: 2025/2026

For multiplayer enthusiasts, Assassin’s Creed Codename Invictus is worth looking forward to. Although still in pre-production, this multiplayer title is set to provide an engaging cooperative experience. Its estimated release window aligns with Hexe in 2025 or 2026.

7. Assassin’s Creed Codename Nebula

Release Date: TBD

Ubisoft Sofia is reportedly developing Assassin’s Creed Codename Nebula and is exploring multiple settings, including India, the Aztec Empire, and the Mediterranean. However, specific details about the game and its release window are currently unknown, as the title remains in its conceptual stage.

8. Assassin’s Creed Codename Raid

Release Date: TBD

Assassin’s Creed Codename Raid is a multiplayer game in its early stages, focusing on a free-to-play, four-player experience with player-versus-environment gameplay. Although a release window has not been announced, fans can anticipate an exhilarating cooperative adventure.

9. Assassin’s Creed Codename Echoes

Release Date: TBD

Ubisoft Annecy is reportedly developing Assassin’s Creed Codename Echoes, a multiplayer title utilizing the advanced Ubisoft Scalar technology. While release details are yet to be disclosed, fans can expect an immersive and innovative online experience.

10. Assassin’s Creed Nexus 2

Release Date: TBD

Assassin’s Creed Nexus 2, a VR title, is reportedly being discussed internally, but no specific release window has been confirmed at this time.

11. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake

Release Date: TBD

Lastly, rumors of an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake have been circulating for some time, and the report suggests that the remake is indeed in development. Set in the beloved pirate-themed world, this single-player game will provide fans with a refreshed experience of the original Black Flag installment.

A lot of Assassin’s Creed games are exciting, but it’s Ubisoft

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has long been a favorite among fans, and with the promise of a plethora of new content on the horizon, excitement is in the air. However, this also raises concerns about the franchise’s future. Ubisoft’s track record of delivering fully polished games on time has been questionable, exemplified by the prolonged development cycle of their own title, Skull and Bones.

Yet, there is cause for optimism as Ubisoft responds to fans’ demands by returning to the traditional vibe of the Assassin’s Creed series with the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, tapping into the essence of what made the franchise immensely popular.

Nonetheless, the direction of the titles after Mirage is still to be seen, particularly with the involvement of multiple platforms like mobile and VR, which could potentially deviate the franchise from its well-trodden path once again.

Quantity Over Quality: The Marvel (MCU) Effect

One of the major concerns with an influx of Assassin’s Creed games in a short span of time is the possibility of releasing unfinished or poorly polished games, which may fall short in various departments and fail to satisfy the loyal fans of the franchise. A rush to produce quantity over quality could prove detrimental to the overall experience.

Moreover, a bigger phenomenon looms over the horizon: the risk of diluting the intrigue, charm, and exclusivity that the Assassin’s Creed franchise has built over the years. This situation draws parallels to what happened with the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Disney flooded the market with TV shows based on Marvel heroes.

Marvel Phase 4 | Disney

The excessive amount of content caused a sense of fatigue among fans, who had grown accustomed to anticipating only a few Marvel movies per year. The quality of the content suffered, and fans began comparing the current state of the MCU to its peak in 2018 and 2019.

The same fate could potentially befall the Assassin’s Creed franchise if Ubisoft does not make wise decisions regarding its most significant gaming property.

Only time will reveal what Ubisoft has in store for the series. Keeping a watchful eye on the developments, we will update you on any news about the new Assassin’s Creed games. Until then, let us know your thoughts about this in the comments section below.
